Now this is the time of year when we start seeing great, classic old films and animated features like "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "A Charlie Brown Christmas"...
And this is the time of year when someone will air one of the ONLY 3 versions of Charles Dicken's classic novel "A Christmas Carol" worth watching. (Forget Patrick Stewart, Reginald Owen and George C. Scott and all the rest.)
For my money, These are the only 3 that count! The Leslie Bricusse musical film with Albert Finney was well-done and fun. And the updated comedy version with Bill Murray called "Scrooged" was a blast. But the ONLY definitive, straight, dramatic version of this story starred Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge. It was just a brilliant, brilliant piece of film-making and and even more brilliant performance. Still... years ago I noticed something.
I had seen this film at least 20 times in my life through all my years growing up. Then one night around Christmas time years ago (And I can tell you this is a long, lonnnggg time ago... because as most of you know, I haven't had a drink in almost 20 years.) ...I came home after a night of partying, blind drunk about 4:00 in the morning. I hit the refrigerator for a cold chicken leg before crashing and turned on a little black and white television in the kitchen, and was delighted to see that this movie was on.
But after a few minutes, in my drunkenness, I thought I saw something on the screen. I think I kinda put a hand over one eye and stared at the TV screen.
Yep!
Checkout the video I posted here today. Then at 3:08 look in the mirror.
Some bonehead-stage-hand or some guest on the set pokes his head out from around a piece of scenery. It looks like he almost realizes that this is a bad idea and backs off a little, but stays in the line of sight through the mirror. I think the scene was such a "keeper" that they had to hope nobody would see it. (Or no one ever noticed it before it went to final print.) Alastair Sim is dead-on in this scene and I'm sure they would never get another take quite like it. When Scrooge returns to the mirror at 3:57... yeah, this guy is still there watching the scene.
.
Funny... never saw that until I was absolutely hammered!

Okay, moving on!
Do you have your tickets already for the concert in 10 days!? I'll check the box office today so I can give you an update about ticket availability in the orchestra. I can tell you this for sure, though. The balcony in this beautiful venue is, like, right on top of the stage! So the seats in the balcony are great! (And they're actually less expensive that the orchestra seating.) So, you might wanna go ahead and grab the best seats up there while they last!

As you may know I am producing a documentary about "That Guitar Man from Central Park". I would like to ask all David's fans out there to write me and tell me any stories you may have about David and his playing in Central Park and how it has affected you or what it has meant to you. I've already heard some great stories, but I know there are more that I haven't heard. So if you got a story to tell about David and his music, please briefly write it out and send it to stories@thatguitarman.com . I will be contacting people from the stories submitted to interview them for possible inclusion in the film. Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone on the hill this summer. - Dean
