Listen, you're gonna hafta check back all this week. If I met you downtown yesterday, if we shared common thoughts or even if we just spoke briefly you might wind up right here on the site in a photo or in a video.
But I'm gonna try to spend the day today shakin' off the fear and ugliness that I experienced downtown yesterday afternoon, after the sweet commemorative ceremonies and remembrances were finished. Today I'm gonna focus on the Good people I met on Friday night and those in my life, and on the music.
Usually, on a Sunday morning in September I'm updating this page with words of gratitude and total amazement at the power of music and laughter. I'm usually thanking you guys for another typically amazing day in Central Park.
Usually... on a Sunday morning following a beautiful day like yesterday in September, I'm quietly jazzin' in the middle of memories of a grassy hill by a Lake in Central Park where pretty girls, young men, old men, beautiful women of every age, people from all across this country and different parts of the world all hung out and sang and laughed and shared another f*ckin' amazing afternoon.

Like I said, man! We have a lot of fun around here.
Today is a little bit different.
.
Yesterday and the night before I had a series of experiences and encounters I will never forget.
You all know how I feel about the Power of music to make a difference in this world. Well, that Power has a wider gate to enter this world when it's coming through a group of beautiful friends. That's another reason why I always say that I feel like the luckiest man alive. The people in my life are good-hearted, strong, thoughtful, intelligent, Creative, funny, caring people.
Now... on Friday night, I was asked to open a candlelight rally with a song I've recently written. The crowd of over 2,000 stretched for two city blocks and it was an uplifting and exhilarating experience of good nature, Reason and Love. (I'll tell you about that this week.)
But I headed downtown yesterday with copies of the same song. I had hundreds of copies of my song "Hey American" made into single CDs and I made 50 DVDs of the music video to give out for free to the people who, I thought, were assembling to stand up for the principles upon which this nation was founded while supporting the renovation of Cordoba House on Park Place. (We were deliberately deceived about that particular event. I'll get into that evil duplicity later this week. What occurred was, for the most part, a really twisted, reprehensible, unAmerican and just plain fucking disgusting display of small-mindedness.)
I, of course, was also aware that yesterday there was to be a rally one block over on West Broadway to raise the banner of intolerance, fear and boastful ignorance just as high as they could... maybe higher. (They're voices always tend to be louder.)
My aim was to give this song out, without comment or confrontation, to people no matter how they felt or where they stood. But I didn't have to go alone. I was joined by a small army of beautiful, thinking, Good people... Laura, Dean, Andrea, Dave, Brendan, Mary, Mimi, Robert, Teresa and Nathan.
What we encountered during the day was both beautiful and ugly. But I am obliged to say with all honesty... the people and the spirit down there were mostly very, very ugly -- the absolute worst and darkest side of human nature. It was twisted-religion and perverted-patriotism dressed in red, white and blue on parade.

But y'know what?
I'm gonna get to that toward the middle of this week... so you'll hafta check back.
Today I'm gonna focus on music and laughs. And TOMORROW I'm gonna focus on the wonderful people I met on Friday night.
Okay. Okay, the song that I was spreading around yesterday is a very simple song that asks a very simple and straightforward question.

As you may know I am producing a documentary about "That Guitar Man from Central Park". I would like to ask all David's fans out there to write me and tell me any stories you may have about David and his playing in Central Park and how it has affected you or what it has meant to you. I've already heard some great stories, but I know there are more that I haven't heard. So if you got a story to tell about David and his music, please briefly write it out and send it to stories@thatguitarman.com . I will be contacting people from the stories submitted to interview them for possible inclusion in the film. Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone on the hill this summer. - Dean
