Holy smokes!

Y'know what?

18 years ago today something became a part of this city...

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

um...

.

.

me.

.

.

.

On this day in 1992, I decided to head to Central Park with my guitar to make a little lunch money. By the end of the year before, 1991, I had become a failure as a human being in every way you possibly could - - a train wreck as a going human concern.

Part of the road to this full, and exciting, and fun, and passionate, and adventurous, and unpredictable Life I live today was the fact that on June 14th !8 years ago I became "That Guitar Man from Central Park".

No words will ever be able to express how grateful I am to all of you - every single one of you reading this right at this moment, and every single beautiful person who ever spent any of their precious time with me on "The Hill" in Central Park.

I've been sharing music, and laughs and thoughts and feelings with the people of New York City, people from across this country and all around the world for a generation or so.

Since the very first day I started the day with James Taylor's song "Sweet Baby James", I have played my songs for hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people at least.

In that time we've been through 3 mayors (Dinkins, Giuliani, Bloomberg), 3 presidents and an inept war criminal (George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, war criminal and frat boy G.W. Bush, and Barack Obama).

We saw Jay Leno take over for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show and we've outlasted him. We said goodbye to Johnny Carson and Paul Newman. "Wayne's World" was in the movie theaters in 1992 and Marisa Tomei won the Academy Award for "My Cousin Vinny".

We all shared the embarrassment of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski, and endured the nightmare of the Bush administration and an illegal and immoral war. We've seen our country become a nation that tortures it's enemies and where many people continue to be above the law.

.

.

We shared the heartbreak and tragedy of September 11th.

.

.

And, we shared an unforgettable day of companionship, compassion and healing together in Central Park on September 16th, 2001.

.

We've seen The Yankees bring home 4 more World Series rings and The Giants win a Super Bowl. We've seen Tiger Woods turn pro and in 1993 we saw Michael Jordan retire.... play baseball.... return to the NBA.... and retire again.

There's just too much to mention here today.

I've recorded 7 albums...

The People on the Hill
In Person
Just a Thought for Christmas
It's Just Us
Crazy on the Same Day
Common Ground
I Love the Company

... and I'm working on my 8th right now.

I've met and worked with the most amazing people, many of whom I will never be able to express fully my gratitude or ever be able to repay for their kindness.

In my personal Life, I have known both indescribable Love and indescribable heartache. I've also experienced miracle after miracle after miracle.

I said goodbye to my buddy of 18 years, a character named Thurman who was in the room with me when I wrote nearly every song and who never once saw me drunk.

What can I say?

.

.

.

Right now, I would like to start naming the people I love, the people I've loved over these years, the people I've met and grown to love - the people I've worked with - the people who've shared this journey - people I've just met - people who've shared their hearts, their laughter, their wisdom, strength and dreams with me.

The People on the Hill.

But, there are just too many of you. (And you know who you are.)

So, I'm just gonna leave this update today by saying what I say to close nearly every update here at the site...

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Thanks again.

.

Thanks for everything.

.

.

See you tomorrow.

PEACE

A note from filmmaker Dean Love...

As you may know I am producing a documentary about "That Guitar Man from Central Park". I would like to ask all David's fans out there to write me and tell me any stories you may have about David and his playing in Central Park and how it has affected you or what it has meant to you. I've already heard some great stories, but I know there are more that I haven't heard. So if you got a story to tell about David and his music, please briefly write it out and send it to stories@thatguitarman.com . I will be contacting people from the stories submitted to interview them for possible inclusion in the film. Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone on the hill this summer.
