Yeah, this is one of those breaks from the fun. (Well, not entirely.)

I have a few questions for those of you who might consider yourselves Republicans or "right-wing" or "Conservatives".

In light of the events of the last few days and the nightmare of the last 8 years... I hafta ask them.

Y'see, I can ask it because I'm a registered INDEPENDENT. I am not a Democrat or a Republican or a Green or a Blue or anything else.

I'm an American singer/songwriter... but I prefer to think of myself as a human being first - - a part of the entire human race, one man among all people, a worker among workers, a tiny yet infinitely significant part of this Universe, and a small piece of forever in a never-ending line.

But yes... I also love the idea of America. I love the principles upon which it was founded. I love the idea of self-governance and a system based on the basic fairness and goodness inherent in all people. (What Abraham Lincoln called "The better angels of our nature.") I love that this idea sprang up in the Age of Reason, The Age of Enlightenment. I love that it was not based on any religion... and in fact was designed to keep the influence of institutionalized religion, in any measure, OUT of government.

So out of abject frustration and in the interest of letting off a little steam, I hafta ask a few questions of the Conservative-Republicans who like my music.

Aren't you outraged as well?

Aren't you outraged over the last 8 years of the Bush administration? Aren't you really, really pissed off about being manipulated and lied to? Aren't you fucking furious at the idea of torturing our enemies? Aren't you outraged and saddened by the deaths of 4,254 Americans in the catastrophic stupid, historically ignorant, immoral and illegal waste that is the Iraq war? Aren't you racked with guilt over the deaths and horrible injury of the hundreds of thousands of men, women and children in that part of the world? Aren't you really pissed off that Geroge W. Bush, Dick Cheney and others can break U.S. law with impunity, and then go about their privileged, insulated lives? Aren't you outraged that the Democrats in the majority now are willing to let it go and sweep it under history's rug as a matter of political expediency?

BUT NOW! Are you embarrassed by the hypocrisy and hollow rhetoric of the Republican Party these days?

Aren't you mortified by the arrogance and hypocrisy of Karl Rove and Ann Coulter?

Don't you finally recognize the insidious poison that is FOX News?

Are you completely embarrassed by a bunch of senatorial suits who have the audacity to speak of economic wisdom after driving an entire nation into the crapper with unregulated greed and selfishness?

Why am I so riled up right now?

After watching television this week, I'm ready to explode.

Question...

Is this the face of America as you see it?

.
. .

A fat bombastic, compassion-free, egocentric bag of wind who doesn't know the difference between The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States? A man who spews such ignorant and unthinking bullshit that it's a miracle the airwaves over this nation don't literally turn a sickly brown?

I read a comment yesterday on a Conservative website, accusing CNN of stretching Limbaugh's photo at CPAC the other day to "make him look fat".

Are you all going insane?

This pompous, unthinking windbag who practically has his own zip code!? This is the face of an American ideology to be proud of? This is the voice of Reason and Goodness as you see it?

A man who has said these stupid, racist, vile, repugnant things among so many others?

"Feminism was established to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream."

"He is exaggerating the effects of the disease. He's moving all around and shaking and it's purely an act. ... This is really shameless of Michael J. Fox. Either he didn't take his medication or he's acting." --on an ad by Michael J. Fox endorsing Claire McCaskill for Senate for supporting embryonic stem cell research

"This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation...I'm talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You ever heard of the need to blow some steam off?" --on the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal

"Too many whites are getting away with drug use...Too many whites are getting away with drug sales...The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them, and send them up the river, too." --in 1995

"The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies."

.

A new friend of mine... a filmmaker named Dean Love, drives back and forth to Washington D.C. for his work. The other day he was driving behind a rather large woman in a HUMMER on the interstate. (Of course she needs an off-road vehicle the size of a tank to negotiate the really rough and rugged terrain of I-95!)

His jaw dropped open when he saw the bumper sticker on the back. He had to snap a photo with his camera-phone and shoot it off to me. The type wasn't clear in the photo, so he created a cartoon bubble to show me what it read.

If you are a Conservative Republican.... CAN YOU EVEN TELL ME WHAT THAT MEANS!??!!!

Have you all gone crazy?

Well, I have work to do. I have a life of purpose. I write songs that tell people they are not alone. I wrote songs about Love. I write songs about... us.

But part of my job is to "comfort the disturbed... and disturb the comfortable." So, I will try my best, song after song, update after update, song after song.... to try to help Reason see the light of day in this country. I will try my best every day to call those Democrats out on their own hypocrisy when I see it. (I'm already pissed off that the Obama administration has decided to ignore the Constitution in regards to prosecuting the Bush administration for war crimes and fro breaking U.S. domestic law. He swore to uphold the Constitution. Neither he or Eric Holder in the Justice Department get to make that choice.)

But.... you guys... over there on the right...

Aren't you embarrassed?

Aren't you outraged?

I really wanna know. Shoot me an email.

Oh, what the hell.... EVERYBODY shoot me an email. I wanna know how you feel these days!

Thanks for showing up.

A note from filmmaker Dean Love...

As you may know I am producing a documentary about "That Guitar Man from Central Park". I would like to ask all David's fans out there to write me and tell me any stories you may have about David and his playing in Central Park and how it has affected you or what it has meant to you. I've already heard some great stories, but I know there are more that I haven't heard. So if you got a story to tell about David and his music, please briefly write it out and send it to stories@thatguitarman.com . I will be contacting people from the stories submitted to interview them for possible inclusion in the film. Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone on the hill this summer.
