There are always a lot of cool things happenin' around this site. And here in New York City, got another couple of indoor concerts coming up. One of them is one week from tonight and you can reserve seats right now, here today a little further down the page. And tomorrow I'm also gonna announce the winner of THE 4 WORD CONTEST!

Y'know... as a songwriter, I work from my apartment. Therefore I get to watch a lot of the so-called "news" in America today. (Actually, when I want real news I watch a lot of CSPAN and Jim Lerher and Bill Moyers. The rest of it is generally crap.) So, let's just say that I "monitor" the cable and network news channels.... CNN. MSNBC... I even monitor FOX until I begin to gag. Before the plane landed in the Hudson 2 days ago, story after story this week had been about Bernie Madoff and his elaborate "Ponzi Scheme".

The news commentators, or talking-heads, read the teleprompter and speak about it with an air of such familiarity and knowledge. Average people seem to talk about it the same way.

"Bernie Madoff's entire enterprise turned out to be an elaborate Ponzi scheme."

"Madoff admitted to his wife and his sons that the whole thing had been a Ponzi scheme!"

Am I the only person in the world who had no fuckin' idea what the hell a PONZI-scheme was!?

Why is it called a Ponzi scheme? Who or what the fuck is Ponzi!?

The Ponz

Well, sometimes around here we're as informative as anything else!

A Ponzi scheme is basically... a pyramid scheme. It's a fake investment operation that pays returns to investors out of the money paid by subsequent investors rather than from profit.The scheme is named after Charles Ponzi, who became notorious for using the technique after emigrating from Italy to the United States in 1903. Ponzi did not invent the scheme, but his operation took in so much money that it was the first to become known throughout the United States.
