Oh man...

Our new friend, Neal, got tickets for that tribute concert at The Garden last night. I 'm so glad he decided to ask me if I wanted to go. It was inspiring. It was a kind of memorial for Timothy White, who was a rock 'n roll journalist. He died suddenly in his 50's, leaving a wife and twin boys... but, I'll tell you he must've been an awfully lovely man. The people who turned out for this thing all expressed very, sincere love and affection for this guy, and then made the night one of the most unforgettable concert experiences I can imagine.

James Taylor briefly introduced the night.

Then, legendary songwriter Brian Wilson took the stage first, and did a series of Beach boys classics that was amazing. And, the night was moving down the runway. They had a band made up of the best session players, side men and singers you ever seen. I'm not going to go into the entire night here. I may do that on another page.... just, y'know, to write about it.

Imagine this... Brian Wilson... followed by Jimmy Buffett, who did "Pirate Looks at 40", "Maragaritaville" and others... followed by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, who did "Wish You Were Here" and a new one, then was joined by Don Henley when he did "Comfortably Numb"...James Taylor opened with "October Road", then Sting joined him on "Close Your Eyes", then Buffett joined him on "Mexico"... Sheryl Crow rocked the fuckin' place. She did "Soak Up the Sun" and "If It Makes You Happy" and others...Don Henley did some of the most amazing stuff I've ever heard and then topped it off with a song that means more to me than I can explain, here, "Boys of Summer"... Sting and J.T. and Timothy B. Schmidt joined Henley... Then Sting did a set that opened with "Roooooox-anne" then did "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and others.... John Mellencamp came out and did "Paper and Fire" and my favorite song of his, "Peaceful World", then finished off his set with "Pink Houses".

Then, everybody took the stage. Can you imagine it? James Taylor, Don Henley, Sheryl Crow, Brian Wilson, Sting, Waters, Schmidt, Mellencamp, Buffett and the kickin-est band, singing Woody Guthrie's "This Train" and then Sly Stone's "Everyday People".

Very cool.

It's got me all jazzed up, musically.

I've got some work to do.

Talk to you tomorow.

Listen, in the meantime... take a look around this new site. Sign up on the mailing list if you want. Start a topic in the "Forum". Listen to some of the songs. Sign up on the maling list here if you haven't in the park, so I can let you know about the stuff we're gonna do over the winter. (And, if you run into a couple of mistakes on this site, let us know where they are. I mean, we're aware that there are a few errors here and there in the song credits and stuff like that. But, this is a massive project that James is doing while he does about a milliion other things.)

A note from filmmaker Dean Love...

As you may know I am producing a documentary about "That Guitar Man from Central Park". I would like to ask all David's fans out there to write me and tell me any stories you may have about David and his playing in Central Park and how it has affected you or what it has meant to you. I've already heard some great stories, but I know there are more that I haven't heard. So if you got a story to tell about David and his music, please briefly write it out and send it to stories@thatguitarman.com . I will be contacting people from the stories submitted to interview them for possible inclusion in the film. Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone on the hill this summer.
